Li Xiaodong's Liyuan library makes the perfect reading retreat

There's a beautiful library in a small Chinese village just beyond the Great Wall that's covered in firewood. If I lived in Beijing or anywhere near, I'd definitely go to this place every weekend for quiet contemplation.

The Liyuan library is clad with multiple layers of sticks that serve not only as decoration, but also act as daylight filter for a perfect reading ambience. Designed by architect Li Xiaodong, the space has integrated shelving, furniture and stairs. It has no chairs or desks, though, just a wooden floor with some elevated platforms where readers can enjoy a quiet, relaxing environment. Truly one of the world's most beautiful libraries!
