The real mission is to capture valuable scientific data: examining how quickly an eagle can gain altitude and precisely how its incredible wings are adapted to achieve such breathtaking, effortless lift.

Where to stay on Mars? Robots could weave bamboo pods on the red planet

Figuring out how astronauts could live comfortably on Mars is a great challenge. They'll either need to bring materials with them, or make use of the planet's terrain to build settlements. 3D printing seems to be the practical solution, but Malaysian designers Warith Zaki and Amir Amzar think they have a better alternative: locally grown bamboo. The idea seems far-fetched, but why not? Bamboo has been utilized by humans for centuries. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and can withstand Mars' harsh weather conditions. According to experts, the plant is very likely to thrive on the red planet because CO 2 in its atmosphere is abundant. So, how can we build a bamboo colony on Mars? As Dezeen points out, the concept, named Seed of Life , would require astronauts to land and find underground frozen ice for water. This thread-like robot could be used to treat clots in the brain

A team of MIT engineers have developed a thread-like robot that they hope will make surgeons' lives easier one day. It's less than a millimeter thick and coated in a self-lubricating material. The device is controlled by magnets, and can easily worm its way through hard-to-reach places in the human body. In the future, this robotic thread may be paired with existing endovascular technologies, enabling surgeons to remotely perform delicate procedures. WATCH:

Want to repel mosquitoes? Use graphene-lined clothes

Health officials in the Philippines continue to seek better weapons against dengue fever as death toll from the mosquito-borne disease continues to rise in several regions in the country. Some people use insect repellents, while others use biological alternatives to kill the thirsty little bloodsuckers. Graphene also prevents mosquito bites. A team of researchers at Brown University discovered that graphene-lined clothing not only is an effective physical barrier to those pesky insects, it also blocks chemical signals in sweat that encourage them to bite. "With the graphene, the mosquitoes weren't even landing on the skin patch—they just didn't seem to care," according to Cintia Castillho, a PhD student at Brown and the study's lead author. Since its discovery in 2004, graphene has been dubbed as a wonder material. It is stronger than steel, lighter than paper, conducts heat and electricity, and highly flexible.

Turning cigarette butts into bricks

Cigarettes are as much an environmental problem as they are a health hazard. Walk along a beach or a bustling street and you step on a lot of cigarette butts. They have poor biodegradability, and for decades they have been thought of as 'unrecyclable'. But an engineer at Australia's RMIT University has found a way to not only divert some of those used filters from ending up in the environment, but also a way to make them into something useful: bricks. Dr. Abbas Mohajerani and his team discovered that fired-clay bricks made with cigarette butts can save energy and help solve a global littering problem. They were found to be lighter with better insulation properties, and their quality is hardly different from that of normal bricks. Mohajerani said: "Incorporating butts into bricks can effectively solve a global litter problem as recycled cigarette butts can be placed in bricks without any fear of leaching or contamination. New study finds shrooms to be effective against depression

A recent study has suggested that magic mushrooms may be a promising treatment option for depression in patients who have not otherwise responded to conventional medicine. Researchers from Imperial College London gave psilocybin, the psychedelic compound in mushrooms, to 12 clinically depressed people. After one week, all of them showed "a marked improvement in their symptoms." From Scientific American : "That is pretty remarkable in the context of currently available treatments," says Robin Carhart-Harris, a neuropsychopharmacologist at Imperial College London and first author of the latest study, which is published in The Lancet Psychiatry. The equivalent remission rate for SSRIs is around 20%.  The study's authors are not suggesting that psilocybin should be a treatment of last resort for depressed patients. "Our conclusion is more sober than that—we are simply saying that this is doable," says Carhart-Harris. "We can give psilocy...

Vintage-style map of Mars 

If you're into astronomy, cartography, and art, this map is an absolute delight. It's a scientifically-accurate medieval-style map of Mars, hand-drawn by Seattle-based illustrator Eleanor Lutz. It's called Here There Be Robots , a reference to the myth that cartographers from the Middle Ages would write "here be dragons" in areas that were unexplored. "Recently I've been really into old maps made by medieval explorers," writes Eleanor on her blog . "I thought it would be fun to use their historical design style to illustrate our current adventures into unexplored territory." She completed the map by using data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), which includes topographic imagery from NASA, and cartography from the USGS Astrogeology Science Center. Preserved tattoos of the dead

The idea of preserving tattoos after death came into existence long before NAPSA . London's Wellcome Collection has over 300 specimens of preserved human flesh bearing tattoos , collected in the late 19th century. There are many more examples of smaller collections in Paris, Poland, Portugal, Berlin, and Austria. But what fascinates me the most is this lesser-known museum at Tokyo University, the Medical Pathology Museum, which houses pieces of skin collected since 1926 by Dr. Masaichi Fukushi. "Fukushi would perform autopsies on donated cadavers and dissect off just the skin. He created a method of treatment to preserve the skin and kept them stretched in a glass frame, essentially like a leather. Later the ownership of the tattooed skin collection was passed on to Fukushi's son Katsunari. Katsunari added a further 20 tattooed skins himself and it's believed that the Medical Pathology Museum has 105 in its collection, many with full body suits." ...

Swedish scientists create transparent 'wood'

Researchers at Stockholm's KTH Royal Institute of Technology have just made wood transparent . The new material isn't as crystal clear as glass, but it could be used to build solar panels or houses that let in more natural light.  These badasses developed the transparent 'wood' by removing lignin, the organic compound that makes the wood brown. When combined with acrylic, the lignin-free wood is about 85 percent transparent. It's also stronger and cheaper than glass, and is suitable for mass production. Lars Berglund, who led the research, says they are hoping to "enhance the transparency of the material", and are looking to "scaling up the manufacturing process". [h/t: Gizmodo ]

Farewell to laundry day? Introducing the fabric that cleans itself when exposed to light

Future clothes could clean themselves, thanks to a group of Australian scientists. All you'll have to do is hang them outside under the sun and presto, clean laundry.  Researchers from RMIT University in Melbourne have developed what they call "self-cleaning textiles," which contain metallic nanostructures capable of degrading organic matter when exposed to light. Experiments showed that deliberately placed stains vanished within minutes. There's still more work to do before we can say goodbye to laundry day, though. The researchers still have to test the textiles with organic compounds to determine how quickly they can handle common stains like ketchup or baby poo, and they also have to find a way to make the new fabrics affordable enough to end up in your closet.

Hemp may be the ticket to our energy future

We all know that hemp has many practical uses, including paper, textiles, construction, health food, and fuel. But in the past few years, scientists have been working on a new way to use the plant. Using perfectly legal hemp fibers, which contain no THC at all, these badasses were able to create cheap, high-performance supercapacitors "better than graphene." "Graphene, an atomically strong material that is 100 times stronger than steel, and conducts electricity at higher efficiency rates than copper, can be applied to transform everyday electronics and machines. The problem is, the carbon monolayer is expensive to produce, which severely limits its adoption in industrial sectors (it cost roughly $2,000 per gram). By comparison, using converted hemp fibers as an alternative for graphene costs less than $500 per ton to manufacture.
