LEGO creatures by Ekow Nimako

I just stumbled onto this expertly crafted monochromatic LEGO creatures by Toronto-based visual artist Ekow Nimako. His perfect selection of bricks really bring these animals to life. My favorite is the adorable black cat named Ms. Fortune (pictured above), which is crafted from almost 5,000 LEGO pieces.

His upcoming exhibition, Silent Knight, will be featured in next month's Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. The piece is made with more than 50,000 LEGO elements and captures the beauty and stealth of the barn owl like it has never been seen before.

Ekow was born in Montreal, Canada and studied Fine Arts at York University in Toronto. An avid builder since childhood, his first LEGO installation, AVIARAGEDDON, depicted over thirty species of weaponized birds in flight as a commentary on war culture and its link to species endangerment.

Enigmatic Shapes and Psychedelic Patterns

To say that I love Sanagi 's work is an understatement. Looking at her art feels sort of therapeutic, and I find her drawings refreshingly intricate. They're trippy, psychedelic, and resemble something that you might see under a microscope. Not much is Googleable about Sanagi, but that's fine. There aren't many artists these days that still pull off the whole mysterious vibe, so I commend her for that. By the way... they're all hand-drawn with pen and ink.

Art doesn't just have to be colorful flowers, sunsets and unicorns – there is artistry in the grotesque as well. Jason Briggs , a Tennessee-based nightmare creator, makes surreal and fucked-up ceramic sculptures of the human body that exist on the boundary between horror and beauty.

Japanese artist En Iwamura creates adorable ceramic sculptures

Kyoto-born artist En Iwamura is showing his latest ceramic creations in a special show on August 31 at the Ross+Kramer Gallery in East Hampton, New York. En's sculpted objects, which he describes as three-dimensional clay doodling, exudes nothing but good vibes with their quirky, playful style. He consciously uses childhood influences such as manga and anime, and draws inspiration from both American and Japanese historical and pop-cultural references along with his own life experiences. Born in 1988, En completed both his BFA and MFA in craft from Kanazawa College of Art and Craft in 2011 and 2013, respectively. His works have been shown in New York City, Seattle, Kansas City, Durham, NC, Japan, Canada, China and more. Thanks for the tip, Rachel.
