Playing Wind Instruments with Helium

You've probably seen—and heard—someone suck a lungful of helium out of a balloon and then speak in a funny voice. But what do you get if you mix wind instruments with helium or sulfur hexafluoride? The folks over at The King of Random performed several experiments to find out what happens when you inhale and play.

Thank you, Sean Connery.

Sean Connery is dead. He left us on Saturday at the age of 90. I still think people pay too much attention to his James Bond flicks. That's fine but I'm more impressed by the multitude of other acting jobs this man had. A very good overview of his long, glorious career can be found here . While his death is deeply felt, we must also celebrate his sheer grit and passion. Here's a clip from one of my favorite Sean Connery movies.

Any of these images look familiar to you?

Brad Blair is a Baltimore-based artist who creates remarkable sculptural monstrosities. His ceramic characters are surreal and mysterious, often stemming from fictional worlds (or plucked from dreams and nightmares). Some are beaded, others adorned with faux hair, others with wire and Swarovski crystals. They're all beautiful, and there are so many layers of expression in each of his pieces. Even with their strange, otherworldly faces, there's a sense of tranquility emanating from the sculptures. Check out a selection of his work below.

The Art of Dolce Paganne

I can't even begin to think about how Dolce Paganne comes up with any of the shit she creates. I do know I'm hooked and can't stop looking at her drawings. Taking influence from Asian horror comic books, occult history and ancient mythology, the Antwerp-based artist makes her own "sinister" universe which expands with each new piece.  Also known as Ceren Aksungur, Dolce has a vast catalog of different media to view on her website and Instagram, so if you like what you see below, check out the rest of it here and here .

Simple Pleasures

Recently, I have been admiring the images of Kitti Narod's acrylic paintings that he's been posting online. I really like the vibrant everyday scenes and cartoonish characters, which hold a healthy measure of humor and delight. Check out his IG . There's so much goodness there.

Goonies Never Say Die

My childhood musical obsessions were Sesame Street songs ,  Queen's Greatest Hits  ,  and the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of the 1985 film The Goonies , which is also the first movie I ever remember seeing in a theater. See Mikey? That's how I wore my hair every single day in grade school. Those were the good times, but I was too busy waiting for the future to arrive.

Caught by Cats

This is in response to Jak Wonderly's photo, titled Caught by Cats , which recently came in first place in the 2020 BigPicture Photography Competition's Human/Nature category. One of the things I always like to visit at my friend Lisa's house is the black Burmese cat because my wife and I can't have one (we have two dogs, a Labrador and a Pit Bull, who hate feline creatures). I'm not sure Selina ever caught a mouse but the last time I went there, she brought me a sand lizard that I think lives underneath the old jackfruit tree at the front yard. I grabbed her by the neck and the reptile dropped out of her mouth. Dead. According to Lisa, her pet bags about two birds a week. She saw Selina snatch a maya last month; the following day a frog succumbed to her attack. Domestic cats aren't just the adorable creatures depicted in unbearably cute Internet videos. They're also lethal hunters. They kill time by killing wildlife, and they are responsible for slaughterin

Another day, another book-to-film adaptation

I saw a lot of great performances by Tom Hanks in a lot of real good movies. My favorite was easily Philadelphia . I hope this film by Paul Greengrass would be as good (or better) than the trailer.

'Strength' by Pejac

One of my favorite street artists, Pejac , recently completed a series of beautiful murals in Spain as a tribute to the brave and diligent COVID-19 frontliners in his home country.

Art that can fit into the palm of your hand

I really like this pocket-sized mural by street artist D*Face —his new collaboration with Zippo. From a Wonderland Magazine interview with the artist: I'm typically not a very "mood-board" kind of person but it certainly made for an interesting challenge to create an artwork that fit both the wall and the lighter simultaneously. The stripes graphic worked nicely because you’ll notice the top stripe of the head pops off when you flick the top of the lighter – I liked the idea of the head and the flame being a kind of hidden alternate top piece to the design – setting my head alight or the ’spark’ inside my head… every time you use it seemed amusing too.

Curiouser and curiouser

I watched Synecdoche, New York on my ancient DVD player two nights ago. I liked it but nowhere near as much as I did when I saw it in a theater in 2008. The story was totally absurd but it somehow didn't matter. Okay. I admit, sometimes I take solace in the recourse of fantasy, of allowing myself to believe that what's going on all around me isn't real. Anyway, here's some music.

Chipmunk Cafe

Quarantine does weird things to people, and in this case food writer Angela Hansberger decided to open her own restaurant for a chipmunk. And each day would make a different pop-up cafe for him. From Bon Appétit : "Important to dining, especially now, is tipping. Thelonious, I’ll admit, had always been a poor tipper. Then one evening I watched as he carried over a mysterious wad of leaves and bits of flowers, things not available near my porch, and left them at the table. For me? Did he leave these special things for me? I considered it an excellent tip. Thelonious Munk comes every day now. Sometimes he sits at the table, waiting for me. He is the diner critiquing my meals; I am the chef and the server, waiting for positive reviews. I switch up the menu, making sure not to overfeed, as chipmunks are hoarders and can eat to their detriment. I watch like a new parent introducing foods to a baby, cataloging likes and dislikes. Google be damned, Thelonious doesn’t dig mushrooms, fresh

'Black is a Color' by Tim Tadder

This is a video of photographer Tim Tadder detailing the technique of pouring thick layers of multi-colored paint on people to achieve striking, technicolor portraits. The project is called Black is a Color , and the results are pretty amazing.  Thanks to my good friend Liam, who told me he's gonna try this over the weekend. Nice, let me know how it goes and if you think I'm capable. Check out more of Tim's work on his Instagram .

Mountain lion stalks, lunges at hiker

This is an incredibly majestic video of an angry cougar stalking some hiker in Utah after trying to take a video of her cubs. It's one of the most relaxing clips I've seen in a while and makes me want to take up wildlife photography.

Hyundai launches fashion range made from discarded car parts

Cars meet various fates when they enter retirement. Some will be scrapped or sent to a museum. Others may end up in shabby backyards, dusty barns and gloomy forests. Another option is to upcycle the automobile's parts. That's the approach Hyundai has taken with a new fashion collection featuring clothes and accessories, all made from materials from discarded cars. Pieces in the range include a stylish tote bag made from seat belt webbing, carpet fabric, and foam; a beautiful corset created from the fabric of a discarded airbag; and a pearl choker made from a discarded seat belt. Prices range from $250 to $1,450. All proceeds will go to the Institute of Positive Fashion, a group devoted to helping fashion labels become more sustainable. [h/t: Fast Company ]

Bob Marley: Portrait of the Legend

To mark Bob Marley's 75th birthday, Rizzoli is releasing Bob Marley: Portrait of the Legend , a new, official hardcover book featuring more than 150 photographs that celebrate the life and influence of one of the pioneers of reggae. Curated by his son Ziggy, the book "mixes the iconic and the intimate, bringing together striking images of Marley as a performer onstage with unseen glimpses into his creative process in and out of the studio and his family life in Jamaica." Last night I pulled out my copy of Bob's 1977 album Exodus and played it all the way through twice. I haven't heard it in a while, and it sounded really good to me.

Crumpled Fashion Models

Let me take you down to the enticing world of Stefania Fersini where her art is presented like a crumpled fashion spread for a high end glossy magazine. But rather than recreating shots of perfectly posed models, the Italian artist represents them on crumpled magazine pages, seemingly pulled from the trash.  When I look at her paintings, I'm in absolute awe. The amount of detail in each piece proves her skill and patience. Be sure to check out the rest of her work and prepare to have your mind blown.

This book is a delightful tribute to the Wes Anderson aesthetic

Peculiar architecture and pastel-hued interiors bring to mind a Wes Anderson movie. In 2017, @accidentallywesanderson gained popularity online, dedicated to photos of interesting places that look like they could be straight out of one of his films.  Now Wally Koval, the man behind the popular IG account, has put the collection into a 368-page book that tells "the extraordinary and unexpected true stories behind more than two hundred stunning locations." It's hardcover, with sewn binding, and features a foreword by the great filmmaker himself. With the release of this book, I'm suddenly craving for that Wes Anderson vibe again.

'Airhead' by SHOK-1

If you were combining spray paints with X-rays, you'd likely get this kind of art. British artist SHOK-1 painted this mural in Hackney as part of the inaugural London Mural Festival. It features a cool blend of art and science and I think SHOK-1 did an amazing job rescuing that bare, boring wall.

Because Pizza Hut is a genius

To welcome the new European football season, this is the limited edition pizza box created by Pizza Hut and Ogilvy with a fully playable foosball integrated into the lid. The box not only serves as a storage for your precious pie, but it also provides an entertaining game for customers to enjoy while grabbing a slice. Unfortunately, this unique foosball is only available to Hong Kong customers and they have to try their luck by visiting the Pizza Hut app or by leaving a creative comment on Pizza Hut HK's Facebook page . 'Seeds Of Love' box set

My favorite Tears for Fears album is The Seeds of Love . I want to make a movie so I can use it as a soundtrack. A couple of factoids: * The album was released in September 1989, entering the UK Album Chart at no.1 and would be certified Platinum by the BPI within three weeks. * In the US, the album peaked at no.8, and was also certified Platinum. Here's a previously unreleased version of their song Standing on the Corner of the Third World , taken off of the super deluxe edition of The Seeds of Love . The four-CD+Blu-ray reissue (out October 9) includes 22 unreleased tracks from demo sessions, live jams, studio sessions along with a definitive set of B-sides, and rare mixes. If you're a fan of Roland and Curt, you'll probably want to add this box set to your Christmas wish list.

Unicorns come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

They're on mugs, clothes, bags, pillows, shoes. They're in cereals, cotton candies, cakes. Little girls love them. Heck, some boys and adults are obsessed too. But do unicorns exist? Yes. And there's lots of them.

Can’t afford the car yet? Start with a Mercedes-Benz eScooter

These days you're a lot more likely to see adults zipping around the city streets of Manila, Cebu, and Davao on top of electric scooters. They're easy to use, easy to store, and fun to ride. But the great thing about this foldable unit is that it's adorned with a three-pointed star.
